Flatiron case study

Who they are

Flatiron Health is a leading healthtech company dedicated to expanding the possibilities of point-of-care solutions in oncology. Hundreds of cancer centers rely on Flatiron technology and services to bring better outcomes to patients in an increasingly value-based world.

Goals and challenges

When the MIPS program started in 2017, Flatiron needed a way to enable its clients to calculate MIPS measures and submit data to CMS. Flatiron sought a partner who could provide MIPS reporting, support their shared clients, and evolve to meet the needs of oncology practices as the program changes.

After researching and vetting partners, Flatiron chose Healthmonix and its MIPSpro registry.

Solutions

From the beginning of their partnership, Healthmonix and Flatiron have collaborated to provide a nimble reporting option for clients:

  • Flatiron developed provider documentation for customers of its EHR, OncoEMR®, to document the information and codes required for MIPSpro.
  • Healthmonix created a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) connection that allows Flatiron to send Quality and Promoting Interoperability category data to MIPSpro. The data is automatically loaded into provider accounts, giving them a chance to review performance each week with current data.

The Healthmonix-Flatiron partnership has also allowed clients to adapt to changes within the MIPS program. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced a new reporting option in 2023, MIPS Value Pathways (MVPs). Healthmonix offered all available MVPs to clients, and some Flatiron customers took advantage of the one that best fit their patients, the Advancing Cancer Care MVP.

Flatiron didn’t need to change its data extract or SFTP setup to support MVPs. That led to clients having the ability to report both Traditional MIPS and the Advancing Cancer Care MVP. They had the option to submit both pathways, with CMS giving them the higher score.

Flatiron clients have also taken advantage of 2 products, MIPS Cost Analytics and MIPS Analytics, that Healthmonix developed after its partnership with Flatiron began.

Results

The Flatiron customers who reported the Advancing Cancer Care MVP (10%) benefited from Healthmonix’s comprehensive reporting solutions. Quality category scores for MVP reporting were 8% higher than those in Traditional MIPS.

Overall, Flatiron practices scored an average of 3 points higher in the Quality and Promoting Interoperability performance categories in 2023 than they did in 2022. They also scored 2 points higher on average in the Improvement Activities category over the same period.

Additionally, Flatiron customers have reported finding value in the drill-down capabilities provided by MIPS Cost Analytics (MCA) and MIPS Analytics. MCA compiles all claims for Medicare patients, providing a comprehensive overview of patients’ healthcare journey and how they affect cost measures. Flatiron customers have benefited from the ability to evaluate cost information at the individual provider and patient level.

MIPS Analytics has provided Flatiron customers the chance to compare data by practice, specialty, region, and more. They also have the ability to monitor performance trends over time, keeping them on track to deliver healthcare excellence. MIPS Analytics helps Flatiron customers connect stakeholders to the data that impacts their revenue.

Validation

“Healthmonix has been a great partner in enabling our practices to navigate the complexities of MIPS reporting. Healthmonix helped coach our mutual clients on MIPS requirements, walk them through the submission process, and submit providers’ MIPS data to CMS. The data integration between OncoEMR® and MIPSpro is easy to set up and unlocks the ability for practices to leverage easy-to-use data visualization and reporting tools.”
